The Local Church, as the Metropolis of Xanthi and Peritherio, whose boundaries coincide with the boundaries of the Prefecture, continues today its work through the centuries. The Holy Metropolis includes 83 parishes of which ten are within the city and the rest in the countryside. About 90 clerics serve in its force. Besides the parish churches there are 100 chapels and 4 monastic churches. The main concern of the Metropolitan and his clergy is the conscious and God-fearing execution of the threefold work of the Church, i.e. the worship, the teaching and the charity.
